Alexandrites are a real phenomenal treasure from the earth, with their fabled colour change from “Emerald by day, ruby by night colour.” The stone completely changes its colour from warm incandescent light to cool fluorescent daylight. It is a marvel to behold.

The stone was first discovered near the Ural Mountains of Russia in the 1830’s and presented to Tsar Alexander. Not only was the stone unique at the time because of the colour change, but the transformation from dark green to a purplish red astonished the court as these were the colours of their flag. It was therefore appropriately named after the Tsar.

Nowadays Russian Alexandrite is only found in antique jewellery, but luckily for us deposits were found in Brazil in the late 80’s. Although they still exhibit the same beautiful colour change characteristic, they are almost impossible to find larger than three carats.

We would recommend them in rings so that you don’t miss the spectacular colour change yourself.
